A good place to live
Having a good place to live is important to everyone.
It can sometimes be difficult for a people with learning disabilities to get their own homes. For example we know that across the UK:
- Very few adults with learning disabilities own their own home
- Adults with learning disabilities often end up living at home with their parents &/or other family members when they are in their 50s and 60s. This means that sometimes their parents are in their 80s and 90s
- There are still a number of adults with learning disabilities who are living in a residential placement as their long term home – this can mean that they have less money to spend and have less choices about how they live their life

It is important that people with learning disabilities are able to get the accommodation and support that best suits their needs.
It is important to try to start planning for future housing needs as soon as possible. Different areas plan in different ways.
Having a good place to live is not just about accommodation – the support we have to be independent, safe and happy in our homes is also very important.
