North Wales Together

Being more independent at home

Having a good place to live

Having a good place to live is not just about accommodation – the support we have to be independent, safe and happy in our homes is also very important.

Some people have support through a Care Agency. Others might employ someone themselves to support them in their homes, often using a Direct Payment.

First Choice Housing Association – Building independence

First Choice Housing Association have been working with Wrexham County Council to plan supported housing. Take a look at the presentation and videos below.

Technology

People use different technologies in their home. In North Wales we have a number of tech demonstration houses or flats that people can visit to see and learn about how different assistive technologies can help. At the moment, these can be found in Wrexham, Conwy and Denbighshire. Feedback from lots of people we have spoken with has made it clear that it is really important for a lot of people to be able to see these things in action. This is because technologies can sometimes be difficult to understand unless you get the chance to use them for yourselves. The Learning Disability Transformation Project want to help people to better understand how different technologies can help people at home, and encourage people to have the ‘Technology Conversation’ more often when support planning.

This year we are going to be supporting Wrexham to make their demo room more up to date. We are also going show case lots of different types of assistive technologies across North Wales, including holding an event. If you’d like any more information about this, please contact us.

Wrexham are working closely with the Learning Disability Transformation Project to improve the use of different technologies to help people live more independently. Wrexham County Council have partnered with First Choice Housing Association to promote the use of assistive technology in their supported living schemes. They have also linked up with Delta, who will be helping them with looking at the impacts of using different technologies.

You can also check out hft’s online smart house demo here. This shows you some of the assistive technology that people may use around their home to improve their independence, quality of life and safety. Their website also contains lots of useful information about technologies and how to use them safely.
