Advocacy

Advocacy is a really important way that people with learning disabilities who might struggle to communicate can make sure they have voice and control. There are lots of different types of advocacy. The Golden Thread Programme made this useful graphic – the rainbow of advocacy – to show all of the different types:

You can contact your local Council to find out about the different types of advocacy that might be available in your area, including self-advocacy groups.

Here you can read Gwent’s co-produced strategy for planning and funding advocacy services. It contains some useful information about how they are looking to make sure that:

– Everyone has equal access to the types of advocacy that are most appropriate for them
– All advocacy services are of a high quality
– All advocacy services support clients most effectively
– Awareness and understanding of advocacy is improved amongst staff and the wider public.
