How we communicate

Check out this video – get to know ME to communicate with ME staring people from North Wales giving their top tips for communicating well with them!

How we communicate is very important to how we can best understand and support each other. People with learning disabilities can sometimes face some additional challenges to communicating their wants and needs.

Conwy Council have produced this useful accessible communication guide aimed at professionals.

Another important way we can make sure people with learning disabilities have real choice and control is by making sure information is easy to read and understand. Learning Disability Wales offer lots of useful tools and guidance to help organisations make sure their information is in easy read, and to understand why it’s so important, including:

– Easy Read Wales Definitions Dictionary
– Clear and Easy Handbook
– Check it! – a toolkit for checking easy read information
– Guidelines for making Welsh easy to read and understand

Check out this video from Learning Disability Wales about the basics of easy read.

Assistive technology to help communication

There are lots of ways that technologies can help people to communicate what matters most to them, and make sure they are getting the right support. This year we are going to be piloting two apps to help people do just this.

Pilot Projects

here2there

here2there is way for people to capture a story of their achievements through words and pictures, and link them to their outcomes and goals. These can then be shared with their circles of support, to help people stay connected, and understand how they can help people to achieve the outcomes they want.

My Health Guide

We are also going to be working with hft to pilot the use of an app called My Health Guide. It uses words, pictures, video and audio to capture and manage the information that matters to them, including things about their health and wellbeing, and what activities they have been up to. Individuals can then choose to share this information with key people in their lives.
