Autism and Neurodivergence

North Wales Together is a supporter of the goal of Wales being a neurodivergent friendly nation.

According to NHS digital and Autistica about 30% of people with a learning disability have also been diagnosed with autism.  Some sources suggest that the overlaps between learning disabilities and neurodivergence may be much higher than this.

North Wales Together Neuro-Affirmative Resources

Many of the people with learning disabilities who have co-produced resources with North Wales Together are also autistic or neurodivergent and our resources have been designed in line with the goal of Wales being a neurodivergent friendly nation.

For example, in developing our recent ‘What is PBS?’ easy read guide we studied the National Autistic Taskforce paper on Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and ensured that we took on board all of their recommendations around how autistic people want to be supported during times of distress.  Feedback from neurodivergent people in North Wales has included a comment that the resource is very neuro-affirmative.

Our new Good PBS – Good Lives training has also been designed to be neuro-affirmative throughout and includes a full section on the importance of reducing stress and distress, including the sensory section of the new regional Neurodiversity profile tool to support learning around understanding and supporting sensory differences.
