Shayna’s Story

About me.

My name is Shayna and I work as a cleaner at Bryn Euryn Nursery and Café. I like going for walks, going to the theatre, shopping and meeting up with my friends and family.

Before the Supported Employment Service…

I was looking for work. I got talking to Kim (North Wales Together) in a conference at the business centre in Llandudno junction and asked if she knew of anything to help people get jobs who have a learning disability.

I was volunteering but was bored wanting to do more and wanted more money on top of what I was getting paid for my job as a Health Check Champion for Conwy Connect.

Where my journey started.

Kim introduced me to Craig (EPC) in the business centre, and they set it up for me to join the supported employment service. Craig was really helpful and introduced me to Annie (CoOptions) who was my job coach.

The support I received.

Annie helped me make a CV and she helped me go over my benefits to see what I could do and what would work for me. Annie helped to arrange a work trial instead of an interview for the cleaning job at the nursery.

Finding the right job for me.

At first, I thought I wanted to work at Primark. We did try but then I changed my mind, I wanted to do a cleaning job because I like cleaning my home.

Primark were only looking at high hours, and I knew that wouldn’t be right for me. That is when Annie helped me find this job, knowing that I like cleaning and the hours would be suited to make sure I could work there and my other job at the same time.

How getting a job has made me feel.

This job has made me really happy; I am really enjoying it. The staff at the nursery have made lots of effort with me, they check in on me when I’m doing my job and are always kind and helpful.

How things are going now.

Paige (my new job coach) came in with me for my first couple of shifts, we went through the file I have to tick off my jobs, and it’s helped that we’ve kept the tasks the same each week to go through. I have more independence now that I have more money and my confidence has grown as I’m getting used to the buses.

If someone is thinking about help to find work, I would say…

Definitely go for it because the job coaches are really helpful. The job coaches don’t rush you; they check to see exactly what you want and will help you with whatever you need.
